How does this supplement and lick calculator work?

Enter animal type, number of animals, expected daily intake in grams per head, feeding days, bag size, price per bag or ton, wastage allowance and optional stock on hand.

The calculator shows daily supplement required, total kilograms for the period, bags needed, cost per animal per day, cost per animal for the period and total herd cost. It can flag urea or non-protein nitrogen (NPN) products and compare stock on hand to requirements.

Results are planning estimates. Follow the manufacturer’s label, adjust intake for veld condition and confirm with your feed supplier or nutritionist.

What formulas does the supplement and lick calculator use?

Intake per animal per day (kg) = grams per animal per day ÷ 1 000

Total supplement per day (kg) = number of animals × intake kg per animal per day

Total supplement for period (kg) = total per day × feeding days × (1 + wastage % ÷ 100)

Bags needed = total kg for period ÷ bag size (kg), rounded up

Cost per kg supplement (R/kg) = bag price ÷ bag size, or price per ton ÷ 1 000

Cost per animal per day (R) = intake kg per animal per day × cost per kg

Total supplement cost (R) = total kg for period (with wastage) × cost per kg

Worked example: sheep on winter veld

120 ewes consume 80 grams of supplement per head per day for 90 days — 864 kg total. At 25 kg per bag that is 35 bags. At R310 per bag, supplement cost for the period is about R10 850, or roughly R90 per ewe. If actual intake on camp is higher than planned, order extra bags before mid-season price increases.
